In The Room

that sounds like
such an unhappy message
you leave on your answering machine

maybe i’m reading too much into this

maybe you’re unhappy with her
and you don’t want to give
any wrong impressions
to anyone who calls

but I haven’t heard
from you in so long
and the message on the
answering machine

well, it isn’t happy

I wonder what you’re like
when you are happy
when you’re interested
in talking
and you want
to smile more
and you want to live more

I want to know you when
you’re like that

maybe you act that way
when you’re around me

it’s been so long
since I’ve talked to you
I can’t say that
I know for sure

or maybe if you were happy
around me
well, maybe
you were just acting that way

to impress me
or to make you feel
better about yourself
or to impress someone else
in the room
I don’t know
