Their Crutches

October 28, 1998

should they tell you in advance what it's like
to go through what you're about to go through?

having an operation
they’ll keep you drugged most of the time
you’ll be unconscious for the operation
you’ll be stuck in a hospital bed
for longer than you want

but this is supposed to be
            what’s best for you,
            that’s what they tell you

you could be tired of being in the hospital
you might want more visitors

no one will know
what to say
everything will think
you need rest, you need help
            even if you’re sure
            you don’t need their crutches

I didn’t say it would be easy
and I haven’t done this before

maybe I can say that
I’m sure that I’ll visit

and I’m sure you’ll be fine
I know you’ll want to hear that
