Questioning Religion,
Father and Son

I knew a child,
a child who grew
to a very smart young man.
He studied engineering at university.
The boy liked
studying mathematics,
seeing how it related
to the universe...
But he declined
that field of study
because it would force him
to question his religious beliefs.

I knew this boy’s father,
a man whose heart
stopped
four times.
After the hospital,
after he recovered
he asked me
if I saw a white light
when I was near death.
I told him “no.”
He said,
“neither did I.”
