Copper

Janet Kuypers
from the “Periodic Table of Poetry” series
5/8/12

The metallic taste in your mouth
isn’t just copper.
I know you think you know the taste,
but lick a coin,
since most U.S. coins are usually three fourths
that element...
But that taste is probably from your blood.
Metal elements
like copper, iron, those are the
elements
coursing through your bloodstream.
They give you
that “copper” taste in your mouth.
Learn the difference.

It’s funny that you think copper,
since it’s
the base of the “Copper Age”, where it
existed
over ten thousand years ago in the
Middle East,
later throughout Asia, also Africa. And
the element
is so commonly used on Earth,
conducting both
heat and electricity, used in construction.

Do you feel
any of that heat, after that electric
charge,
do you feel it in the construct
of your body
from that copper taste in your mouth now?
I mean, copper
is a trace element in plants and animals,
and the human
body even contains one milligram of
copper per pound.

But you know, the thing is, what’s
really funny,
if you want to be technical about it
and break it down,
is that the copper jacketed bullet
was not invented
until Lieutenant Colonel Eduard Rubin
of the Swiss Army
used it in eighteen sixty two, and the first
Google search
for “copper jacket bullet” actually produced
the link to
“Making Your Own Copper Jacketed Bullets”.
Because you see,
even though there is copper in blood,
I made
my own copper jacket bullets, so nobody
could trace
the bullet that was just shot through your
mouth
and is now lodged precariously close
to the base
of your skull. Actually, it’s really funny,
if you think
about it, tasting copper in your mouth.

“Your writing is SO good that I taste the copper clad bullet.....and I feel the gun in my throat.....I understand.”
